April 4th at 6pm a gathering to Shine a Light on Autism will be held at Founder's Park (near the Fish sculpture). Blue glow sticks will be given to the first 100 people. We will walk towards Sioux Park at dusk to Shine our Light and raise awareness for Autism. Autism is now 1 in every 68 births. An increase of 30% since 2012.

A veteran entertainer, extraordinary guitarist, comedy writer and published songwriter, Gordy has performed his stand-up musical comedy show as The original Fabulous ONE GUY for hundreds of corporations, associations and other organizations, large and small. Gordy also does a full-length concert, performed throughout the United States, and a historical show: “Seth Bullock: The Spirit of the West.” He has appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America, where he sang “Days of ‘76”, an original song from his “Seth Bullock” show, and opened for Kenny Chesney, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Beach Boys and many more.

Swimming Program at the YMCA starting on January 9th (thursday) from 6:30 to 7:30.  We will not be able to do one-on-one.  The children should be independent swimmers.  We interview the parents on the phone, if he/she is new to the program.  This program will run for four weeks and at the cost of $40 per child.  If you are interested, please call Dennis Hanken at 721-5533 or email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. 7th Annual Mardi Gras Autism Fundraiser will be March 1, 2014 at the Hotel Alex Johnson.

We are looking for volunteers to help with the event. The first planning meeting is Dec. 6 at noon at Seattle's Best at the Hotel Alex Johnson. Attend a wonderful Workshop to learn how to create a One Page Introduction as a way to educate and help others, in a very understandable and specific way, to support your toddler, child, or adult. It has saved me hours of explaining to teachers, aids, Special Olympics coaches, etc. how to understand and better care for Andrew.
South Dakota Parent Connection wants to hold the next Rapid City workshop when people are available. They just need one parent/caregiver although more family members and the individuals themselves are all invited. Click below for a description of the workshop.

We will hear from Sandra Lia Rodrigues Franco, a teacher, psychologist and mother from Santos, Brazil that has written a book about her 19 year old son who has had multiple diagnosis over the course of his life.  She is committed to sharing her story to help others.
 
Meet Sandy Burns, President of the Society and interact with other parents.  Families with new diagnosis will be able to meet other families and ask questions about autism.
